Fernando Alonso is confident that McLaren will improve in the second half of this season and show much better performances than we have witnessed so far.

The Spaniard described the situation of his team, especially regarding the problems with Honda's power unit, in Silverston as slightly sad, although he managed to win the first point in that race this year. However, he is convinced that things will improve significantly after the summer break.

“The second part of the year will show a completely different McLaren that will be more competitive. The upcoming steps are quite large. It’s not that hard to gain when you’re at the start two seconds off the pace of the leaders - each next step is half a second or eight tenths. When you fight for the podium, you may gain only one tenth every two weeks. We will soon be much closer to the best, ”says Alonso.

The world champion from the 2005 and 2006 seasons admitted that otherwise there will be racetracks that will not be to the liking of their MP4-30. “Austria, Canada, Belgium and Italy are the four most demanding racetracks in terms of power, which is not good for us. We have already done with two, and two are waiting for us soon. ”

He also stressed the awareness and acceptance of the fact that the connection with Honda is a long-term project, the progress of which he is satisfied with. Although he regrets that they have already used five engines in eight races, he believes they have learned a lot from this, which is more than welcome. “We started from scratch and unfortunately there is no room to wait in this sport. Everything needs to be done immediately and quickly, but this is not happening. It is important that this does not worry us, but we continue in the same direction. We have talent, resources and commitment, so more visible progress is only a matter of time, ”concluded Alonso.
