Alex Rins was the positive surprise of Friday's free practice in Austin. The Spaniard set the third best time and, as the only Honda rider, secured direct entry into the faster qualifying group.

In the first free practice, he first tested two chassis versions of the Honda motorcycle again, his own and that of Marc Marquez.

"In the morning I tested both versions of the chassis, my own and from Marc. I feel better with mine. The new format of the race weekend has greatly limited the possibilities for testing new things in free practice sessions. At the end of the second training session, I had to set a fast time in order to secure a direct qualification to Q2.”

When asked how Honda's motorcycle differs from Suzuki's, he answered:

"The two motorcycles are very different. The Honda is much harder to handle. On this track, the problem arises mainly in the first, technically demanding sector. I sat on a Suzuki for six years, so I need time to get used to a completely different motorcycle. This one still has a lot of room for improvement."
