Today at the race in Turkey, in only the sixth race after breaking his femur, Tim Gajser achieved his first breakthrough to the winners' podium in the best possible way, in any of the individual races or in the overall race after his return. The Makolčan was second in the first run, but won the second, thus celebrating his first victory in the MXGP after exactly one year, when he was also injured at this venue. In total, this is already his 44th success in WC races in both classes.
Gajser, who is returning after a serious injury, was the first to choose the starting position for the first time this year. In Afyonkarahisar today, in the first run, he made good use of this position and took the lead after the start. Behind him, the leader in the WC, Jorge Prado, had bad luck, he fell and slipped far into the background.
In the second run, Gajser looked great. After the start, he led again, and his advantage over his rivals only increased. Everything looked perfectly smooth until lap 12, when he made one of the few mistakes of the race and crashed. After the fall, he was on the ground for a few seconds, but the lead was already so big that he still remained in first place.
Gajser said: “Great weekend. I already felt good yesterday, but today I might have felt a little tired and sore in my arms in the first ride, so I didn't risk everything. In the second I did great, I got a good lead, but then I made a mistake and fell. But I was ahead enough to stay in first place."
Despite a bad day in the WC, Prada retained the lead, he has 841 points, while Febvre is now at 774. Gajser is already in 199th place with 17 points.
The next race will be the test in Italy's Maggiora in 14 days.
