Stroll: A copy of Red Bull would be two seconds faster

Lance Stroll says the Aston Martin car would be two seconds per lap faster if they copied the Red Bull RB18 car.

Aston Martin has attracted attention with innovations ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, which makes the AMR22 strongly reminiscent of Red Bull. The FIA has examined the form and ruled that it is not a disputed copy, although Red Bull insists it even has evidence that some employees who switched from Milton Keynes to Aston Martin downloaded some data from the servers.

But although the car looks like the RB18 at first glance, it is certainly not as fast on the track, as Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel won 18th and 16th place in the qualifiers, and Red Bull racers start the race from second and fifth. Stroll believes this in itself is proof that Aston Martin did not copy the race car.

“Where are the Red Bull race cars? If our car was a copy, it would be two seconds faster, ”said the Canadian. “I have been having problems with the balance of the car all weekend. It is a completely different set of aerodynamics, a different height of the car, so all the settings and other details have changed. We need to see if we have overlooked something, or if we could have done something differently. I hope we missed something, because we were in the last race in the last part of the qualifications, and now they have dropped out in the first part. ”

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel also hoped that extensive changes would help the team reach the top ten. "I was surprised, because I expected us to be better today, to be somewhere around tenth place."

Vettel showed better form in training, but failed to transfer it to qualifying. “The round was good, even though I had a lot of work to do. The race car was pretty slippery, but it doesn’t bounce anymore, so we were able to start trying other things. We know that now the race car is completely different, and so is its behavior. On Friday, I spent more or less the whole day figuring out which driving style was the most appropriate. ”
