A video of a former Mercedes engineer has surfaced online, revealing the reason why the German manufacturer's team enjoyed such a huge advantage when introducing the new 6-cylinder hybrid powertrains.

In the conversation, the alleged engineer of the Mercedes team reveals that the team has invested all its resources in the development of new engines, which they started long before 2014, when they were used for the first time and started testing them on the test bench already in 2011.

The most surprising part of the conversation is where the engineer says that they turned to the FIA with the collected data, which then adapted the rules to their engines, so to speak.

It has been known for a long time that Mercedes started the development of new power units years before the introduction, among other things the former president of Ferrari Luca di Montezemolo spoke about this in 2017, who said that Niki Lauda, the consultant of the German team, admitted to him , that "Mercedes has been working on a hybrid powertrain since 2007." Di Montezemolo added that this also explains why Mercedes has even threatened to pull out of F1 if the current powertrain design is not confirmed in 2014.

"Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari already knew for five years what engines we would use," said the then president of the FIA, Jean Todt, in the 2014 season.
