Pol Espargaro has confirmed rumors that he was contacted by Honda regarding the possibility of participating in the next season, but the Spaniard has decided to remain part of the KTM team.
The younger of the Espargaro brothers competed for the Honda factory team in the 2021 and 2022 seasons and then returned to KTM before the start of this season. This time to their satellite team GasGas.
The Spaniard lost his seat to Pedro Acosta after just one season, and will thus perform the role of a test driver for the Austrian team next season.
Today, Alberto Puig admitted to the press in Sepang that Espargaro, along with Luca Marini and Fabio Di Giannantonio, was among the main candidates to replace Marc Marquez. At Honda, they want to offer the racer only a one-year contract and thus have a greater choice at the end of the next season, when most racers' contracts expire. This was the main reason they were rejected by Miguel Oliveira, otherwise their first choice.
"Albert and I get along very well. He is a very good man who, despite his difficult situation, does his job exceptionally well. Honda found themselves in a very challenging situation because of Marco."
"Most of the best racers' contracts do not expire until the end of the next season. That is why Honda is currently in a difficult situation, which is not their fault. I spoke with Albert about the possibility of cooperation. But at the same time I had to talk with the leading men at KTM, where we came to the conclusion that it is better for me to stay part of the current project. I have a contract until the end of next season, and then we will see what and how to proceed."
